The year 2021 has been quite challenging. Aside from the ongoing pandemic, the effects of climate change such as wildfires, floods, longer winters, and heat waves have also impacted the lives of various people across the globe. The unprecedented change in our climate has also contributed to a natural gas shortage, which led to an ongoing energy crisis in Europe and it may soon affect communities worldwide. Currently, UK, Germany, France, and Spain are all affected by the shortage. Netherland’s energy prices are also on the rise.

Different people would define history according to how they look at their past, whether as an individual or part of a collective. Whatever you deem significant to the formation of your person and identity is your history. During the height of intolerance in the 17th century, François-Marie Arouet’s definition of history would be different. Better known by his nom de plume Voltaire, the French writer declared that “history is only the register of crimes and misfortunes."

Imagine living in the UK and savouring the last moments of winter, but waking up on the final week of your February to suddenly unrelenting cold and heavy snow. Overnight, your front porch has filled with several inches of snow, and your car looks as if it turned to snow.

Digital eye strain is a 21st-century problem. As technology allows businesses to remain agile and improve collaboration, it comes as no surprise that office workers have increasingly relied on computers to get their tasks done right away. But at what cost?

We have five different senses: eyes to see, ears to hear, nose to smell, tongue to taste, and skin to touch. Getting enough water every day is important to your wellbeing and necessary for your organ functions. In the Journal of Biological Chemistry, the human adult body is composed of 60% water. Your brain, kidneys, heart and lungs need around 80% of water to function, and your skin needs to be composed of 75% water to maintain its elasticity. As your breathing, digestion, and waste removal depend on your constant rehydration, it is no wonder that you feel lethargic when you're thirsty. Many experts also go as far as saying that you need water more than food if you're lost in the wilderness.

Since the 2020 pandemic began, more people have reported experiencing more sleep issues, with the necessary medication prescriptions increasing by 20%. As the vaccination programmes are ongoing all over the globe, many people are in between a rock and a hard place.

You are undoubtedly familiar with the feeling of thirst: the parched feeling at the back of your throat and the need to drench that dryness with cool and refreshing water. Especially on humid and physically demanding days, it is severely tempting to guzzle water.

In Charles Dickens’ Barnaby Rudge (1840), there is a sentence that suggests that people used to sleep for two separate sleep periods. The text reads:

“He knew this, even in the horror with which he started from his first sleep, and threw up the window to dispel it by the presence of some object, beyond the room, which had not been, as it were, the witness of his dream.”
