Do you find yourself struggling with lower back pain each month during your period? Then you are not alone. Studies show that at least 50% of all women suffer from some form of menstrual pain. This doesn’t mean that you just have to accept the pain. You can do something about it. Here are seven ways to relieve lower back pain during your period.

1. Get a massage.

Massages are excellent for eliminating lower back pain. They release muscle knots not only in your lower back, but your entire body as well. The best kinds of massage for pain relief are the Swedish massage, which focuses on long, slow, strokes, and the deep tissue massage, which uses the forearm or elbow to exert pressure.

To get the full benefits of a massage, make sure to get it only from a fully licensed and qualified massage therapist. This way, you also avoid any unnecessary injuries.

2. Take deep breaths.

Sometimes, even something as simple as deep breathing can soothe lower back pain caused by menstrual cramps. What you can do is practice a deep breathing technique called Pranayama. It will lessen your lower back pain as well as reduce your anxiety, increase your energy, and lower your blood pressure.

3. Stretch your back muscles by doing yoga.

If you’re still able to move while on your period, you can do these yoga stretches to help with your lower back pain.

  • Sphinx pose
  1. Lie down on your stomach with your feet hip-width apart.
  2. Place your elbows directly under your shoulders.
  3. Hold for one to three minutes.

  • Child’s pose
  1. Kneel with your knees slightly apart and your feet together.
  2. Lay your torso over your thighs.
  3. Rest your head on the ground
  4. Place your arms in front of you, and reach as far away as you can for a deeper stretch.
  5. Hold for one to three minutes.

  • Supine twist
  1. Lie flat on your back.
  2. Straighten your arms to form a “T” shape.
  3. Bring both your knees closer to your chest.
  4. Lower your knees to one side and look away from your knees.
  5. Hold for one to three minutes.
  6. Repeat on the other side.

4. Go for a walk.

It may seem counterintuitive, but going for a leisurely walk can actually ease your lower back pain. The motion you make when you walk relaxes your muscles and prevents them from tightening up even more.

However, walk only if you can manage it. Never force yourself if your lower back pain is so severe that it incapacitates you. You also need to remember to keep your pace as relaxed as possible, as going hard will only increase your pain further.

5. Buy a heating pad.

Applying the proper amount of heat to a tight muscle can relax it and ease pain, which makes heating pads an effective tool for lower back pain relief. Get the best heating pads you can afford, and choose one made of high-quality fabrics, like fleece. Keep in mind that most heating pads are not medical devices. Thus, they are not designed to cure your pain.

6. Take supplements.

Medical studies show that certain herbs are powerful remedies for menstrual cramps and lower back pain. If you regularly period pains, consider taking supplements with ingredients such as chaste berry, cramp bark, black cohosh, turmeric, and evening primrose.

7. Consume nutrient-heavy foods.

Food rich in nutrients like magnesium, calcium, and potassium are useful for managing painful symptoms caused by periods. You can get magnesium from spinach, almonds, and avocados; calcium from soybeans, kale, and fish; and potassium from bananas, white beans, and sweet potatoes.
