Music Therapy For Sleep: Everything You Need To Know

music helps sleep

We all sleep. You sleep, your co-workers sleep, and even your pets sleep. In that regard, we are all the same. The difference lies in what people do to help them sleep, since each person has a different way of preparing for bed. Some people like to read a book, some people like drinking tea or warm milk, and some people like to listen to music.

Even though there are plenty who listen to music before sleeping, there are still those who think that using music for sleep (lullabies) is reserved only for babies and toddlers. They couldn’t be more wrong. Music is an amazing sleep tool that can also be used by adults, but how exactly does it help?

How music as therapy works

Listening to music before sleeping is a great way to relax your mind and prepare it for sleep, and it’s a scientifically proven fact. In 2013, peer-reviewed scientific journal Public Library of Science One (PLOS One) published a study that confirmed that listening to music aided in sleep.

PLOS One also found that that classical music was specially powerful at helping people with sleeping problems like insomnia. Classical string-based music that was around 60 beats per minute causes the brain to synchronize your heart rate with the beat of the music. This, along with decreased anxiety and blood pressure due to the music, makes you feel more drowsy and thus sleep better.

There are two main stages of sleep: 1) non-rapid eye movement sleep and 2) rapid eye movement (REM) sleep. The first is the light sleep stage and the second is the deep sleep stage. Listening to music affects your deep sleep stage by triggering changes in your brainwaves and makes you fall into a much deeper level of sleep.

Different kinds of music for sleep

You might be asking yourself “What if I don’t like classical music? Is there no other type of music I can listen to to help me sleep?” Classical music is a great example, but it is by no means the only music you can listen to before bedtime. You’ll be happy to know that there is a wide variety of sleep music out there such as:

  • Ambient music

This is a genre of music that emphasises tone, atmosphere, and soothing sound patterns, instead of the musical structure used on other traditional genres. The main characteristics of ambient music are repetitive patterns, the creation of mood through electronic synthesizers, and the complete absence of compositional elements like lyrics, beats, and melodies.

Some of the best  ambient music artists that you can check out include Brian Eno, Steve Roach, Robert Rich, Harold Budd, Tim Hecker, Eluvium, and Tangerine Dream.

  • Soft rock

Unlike hard rock that often features aggressive vocals and loud, distorted guitars, soft rock focuses more on soft melodies and the use of an acoustic guitar. Songs in the soft rock genre are usually slow to mid-tempo, which is what makes an ideal music for sleep.

Soft rock originated in the 1970’s, so there’s a vast collection of artists you can choose from. The most popular ones are Fleetwood Mac, Elton John, Billy Joel, The Carpenters, Air Supply, Phil Collins, Chicago, Eric Clapton, and James Taylor.

  • Music with binaural beats

Binaural beats are simply two different sounds heard from opposite ears. When you listen to eat while trying to sleep, it stimulates your brain and helps you achieve a more restful sleep. If you consistently listen to binaural beats over a period of time, you can actually make your circadian rhythm go back to normal.

  • Nature sounds

Sounds from nature are not considered music per se, but they are still incredibly soothing to listen to. From the name itself, nature sounds are sounds from things like rain, the ocean moving, waves hitting the shoreline, birds chirping, and even the sound of whales “singing” underwater.
